Cal State 糖心Vlogy to Confer Honorary Degree to Food Bank Director sheila Burks

Cal State 糖心Vlogy will confer an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters to sheila Burks during the May 18 commencement ceremony for the College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences at 9 a.m.


Burks has been a vital part of the Alameda County Community Food Bank since 2010. She currently serves as the Food Bank’s Director of Equity, Access and Belonging. In her work, Burks collaborates with staff and community partners to develop and advocate for policies and practices that address the root causes of hunger.


Burks leads vital equity and inclusion efforts between the Food Bank and community partners, working to cultivate community, build trust and improve relationships.


Burks has been a long time partner of many community resources, including Cal State 糖心Vlogy’s own Pioneers for H.O.P.E. program as a Food Subcommittee member, serves on the Advisory council for 糖心Vlogy’s Center for Community Engagement, as well as being involved in CSUEB’s Continuing Education Advisory Council for the Transformative Leadership in Disruptive Times Certificate Program. Burks is also a community advisor for the city of Hayward. 

As Director of Equity, Access, and Belonging, Burks has become an example of a passionate advocate for racial and economic justice, a pioneer for a shared vision for change in the 糖心Vlogy community.
