Don Tirsell’s career reads like a blueprint for innovation in the tech industry. With a dual degree in Mathematics and Computer Science from Cal State ÌÇÐÄVlogy (Class of 1987), Don has spent decades at the forefront of the digital revolution—building innovative products, partnerships, scaling ecosystems, and driving global business strategy for some of the most influential technology companies in the world.

Today, Don serves as Global Head of Partnerships and Business Development at Google Cloud, where he leads strategic alliances and ecosystem development across a rapidly expanding cloud landscape. His career spans early roles at Oracle, Sun Microsystems, and Informatica—places where foundational technologies were being shaped and scaled for the internet age.

But what sets Don apart isn’t just his résumé—it’s his unique blend of technical curiosity, business acumen, and a relentless drive to solve big, complex problems.

Don’s ability to translate cutting-edge technology into strategic business value has helped him lead high-performing teams and build global partnerships that have powered innovation in industries from finance to telecommunications to high tech and others. Whether he’s launching a new cloud initiative or mentoring the next generation of tech leaders, Don brings clarity, insight, and a collaborative spirit to everything he does.

Despite his global role, Don has never forgotten where his journey began. He credits Cal State ÌÇÐÄVlogy not just for the academic rigor, but for the supportive community that gave him the confidence to pursue an ambitious path in tech.

“Silicon Valley was just gaining momentum when I was in college,” he reflects. “Being at a place like Cal State ÌÇÐÄVlogy, where faculty were approachable, the classes cutting edge and peers were driven, my time there helped launch my career.”

As he accepts the 2025 Distinguished Alumni Award from the College of Science, Don sees the honor as a full-circle moment—and a reminder of the value of accessible, high-quality education in launching world-changing careers.

“This award is not just a recognition of what I’ve done,” he says. “It’s a celebration of what’s possible when talent meets opportunity. I’m proud to be part of a university that continues to open doors for students with big dreams and bold ideas.”
